Augmented reality’s role in knee replacement surgery drove the bulk of ODT website traffic this past week. 

Cybervisitors were captivated by Artholense, a 3D spatial mapping device created by orthopedic surgeons Russell Nevins and David Backstein. The pair described the inspiration for Arthrolense and its potential benefits for knee replacement surgery. The Arthrolense surgical guidance system allows a surgeon to have visualization of a knee—or any joint—and it gives a degree of visualization that has never been possible before, including the ability to manipulate information before making irreversible cuts to a patient’s bone. “The benefits of the device are numerous. Not only will surgeons be able to operate with absolute precision, they will also collect invaluable data every time they use the device,” Nevins and Backstein wrote in an exclusive online posting.

Product news drove most of the other website traffic this past week. Aurora Spine and FX both earned FDA 510(k) clearance for their respective devices, while OrthoPediatrics released a new PediFlex clamp system.

Aurora Spine’s 3D-printed DEXA SOLO-L spinal fusion system device is part of a bone density matched implant based on the company’s technology platform. DEXA SOLO-L is the first device of its kind for lumbar spine as a color-coded, bone-mimicking structure implant. This line follows this company’s recently released DEXA-C cervical implant line.
 
FX’s V135 platform includes a mini stem humeral component set at 135 degrees for anatomical and reverse configurations. The unique-to-market net shape molded humeral cups lets surgeons use an asymmetric humeral cup if they prefer to change inclination to 145 degrees through the humeral cup. FX V135’s configuration also features a taper component for 360 degrees of eccentricity, allowing dual eccentricity between the taper and humeral head components. The company is launching humeral heads with variable head heights to accommodate patient anatomies.

OrthoPediatrics’ new PediFlex Advanced Interlock Clamp System is an innovation that transforms the PediFlex Advanced surgical system, as it provides surgeons with all needed options when using stable, elastic intramedullary nail to treat fractures in children, according to the company. Compatible in sizes 1.5mm to 4.5mm in both stainless steel and titanium, the Clamps are designed to solve an unmet implant need to prevent problems associated with unwanted nail stability and migration.
